P'ay P'ur-Baks v 1.4

Installation: Simply unzip the files into the main SEIV folder with any utility which will retain the directory structure--e.g., WinZip. If, like me, you tend to play the TDM Modpack almost exclusively, you can leave the graphics files where they are, but you'll have to create a "P'ay P'ur-Bak" folder in your TDM Mod "Pictures/Races" folder, and copy the AI files into it. Also copy the Pulp.txt file into the TDM "Dsgnname" folder, and the emp file into the TDM "Empires" folder. Right now, the only emp I have made is a 5k version.

The P'ay P'ur-Baks are a sequel of sorts to the Pulps. After I finished the latter, I decided I wanted to make a race based on SF paperback illustrations. However, I had found many fewer paperback scans online than I had pulp covers, and there were few that could be manipulated into vehicles for SEIV. So, the project went on the back burner for quite a while.

Eventually, I thought of making the paperback race with ships that looked essentially like flying books. Once this idea hit me, it took relatively little time [compared to what it took to make the Pulp race] to turn out a set of ships for the P'ay P'ur-Baks, altho some work was involved in giving the 2-D cover scans a 3-D appearance. The covers I employed came primarily from the fifties and the sixties of the last century, with a few somewhat more recent examples. The artist credits for the covers used here [plus the title and author of the book bearing the cover], to the best of my knowledge, are:

I have been less successful tracing the cover artists than I was with the Pulps--altho admittedly I spent less time on these.

The Speech file is the same as the one for the Pulps. When I get time, I'll play with it a bit. The design name file was constructed in the same fashion as the one for the Pulps--Paperback authors and cover artists by last name, characters by their full name, a few titles of paperback SF novels, and some place names from same. Some duplication exists with regard to the Pulp design name file, as many paperbacks reprinted work that originally appeared in pulp magazines. Unlike the pulp file, in which I included pulp titles from all genres, the paperback design name file is limited to names from SF and mystery/detective fiction.
